Along the River Marecchia
Itinerary: Santarcangelo di Romagna, Sant’Andrea, Santo Marino, Ponte Verrucchio, Santo Marino, Sant’Andrea, Santarcangelo di Romagna
Designed for families with children who are already used to riding bikes, the cycle path along the River Marecchia offers some interesting ideas for a fun day out. Starting in Santarcangelo di Romagna and then moving towards the river, the first stop is at extraordinary Mutonia art park and its cyborgs and mutant sculptures. The itinerary continues along the cycle path to Cava Park, a theme and educational park dedicated to the fossil deposits found in the Marecchia area. Going back up the river, you can finally begin to make out the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Saiano, which stands on a rocky spur on the left bank of the river. At the end of the itinerary, before turning back, there is a charming pedestrian bridge flanked by a small area where you can enjoy the refreshing waters of the River Marecchia, the perfect way to cool off on hot summer days.
Curiosities
Mutonia
On the banks of the River Marecchia is Mutonia, an open-air museum dedicated to the work of the Mutoid Waste Company. Sculptures, constructions and all kinds of visual creations are the fruit of creativity and the reuse of materials such as sheet metal, plastic and glass. Founded in 1990 by English artists participating in the Santarcangelo Theatre Festival, Mutonia is still inhabited to this day and has been recognised as a “sculpture park and open-air museum”.
